The Polish florist market offers many species of plants that are intended to be grown at home. The choice is enormous – from various flower shapes and leaf colors to fancy stems. However, it is the fern that wins the hearts of many plant lovers by its relatively low maintenance requirements. Learn how to properly care for this plant!

Why should you choose to grow ferns? First of all, because it fits perfectly in any space. It will perfectly find its place in a modern interior, raw industrial, office or bedroom. It all depends on what accessories we use to compose it with.

What are the requirements of the fern?

Some fern species have low cultivation requirements. However, many of them require a professional hand and knowledge to grow it. Before you purchase plants, carefully research the requirements they make. This type of flower does not like concentrated light. If you have the option, place it in an area where there is shade. Do not expose it to direct sunlight. When you think the fern doesn’t have enough light, know that it needs far less than other species. Room temperature is best for cultivation. However, do not let the flower be located near radiators or other thermal devices. Ferns develop fastest at 20-25℃ in summer and five degrees less in winter.

Watering ferns

Make sure that the soil where the plant is located is gently moist. Water it regularly every 2-3 days without overwatering it. During autumn and winter you can do it much less often. Use soft water at room temperature for this purpose. Tap water contains a lot of calcium carbonate, which makes it too hard. Concentrate on not over-watering fern leaves that are too young. If you inadvertently overwater a plant, pour the excess out of the pot so that the fern is not standing in water. Dry air is the enemy of this species, and it does poorly in a space with central heating. In such situations sprinkle the fern with water not containing calcium carbonate.

In the first quarter of the year, transplant it to new soil containing more vitamins and minerals. The frequency is not regular, as some people do it every year, while other plant lovers do it every few years. Take care of a suitable, high quality substrate with a high humus content.

The best-known fern species

One of the genera most favored by home-growing enthusiasts is zanokcica (Asplenium). It is represented by as many as several dozen different species. The one, which we know from our homes, is called the nesting fern. Its leaves are unusual for this species, forming bizarre shapes, and it can reach a height of up to 100 centimeters!

Next to it, Platyceriums, called moose horns because of the shape of their young leaves, are still popular at home. These ferns fit perfectly in a space with a higher ceiling because of the long leaves they are endowed with. The minimum temperature for them is 15℃. If humidity drops below 60%, their leaves will begin to turn brown. Repotting is done when the surface is covered with roots. It is recommended to avoid shining agents.

Another popular species is golden phlebodium. It has unusual, ornamental leaves in light blue and green colors. The spore takes on a golden coloration, hence the plant’s name. It is not easy to maintain as it needs a specific temperature to survive. In winter it will be 14-16℃, such a temperature in an apartment with heating can be difficult to achieve. Phlebodium should be supplied with new soil and a larger pot every spring due to its rapid growth process.
