Echo in the room? See how to get rid of it!
It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

The cozy and quiet house makes us want to stay in it. It is our refuge and meeting place. Unfortunately, high rooms can cause problems with echo – reverberation. In order to avoid it, a proper acoustic insulation is necessary. We will tell you how to do it properly.

How does reverberation occur?

Echo, or reverberation, occurs when sound waves bounce off smooth surfaces and overlap. They reach the eardrums with a slight delay, which is very irritating in the long run. This problem usually affects very high and large rooms, but echoes also occur in apartments. In addition, the sound travels not only within one room, but also reaches other rooms, which in the long run is also annoying.

Modern construction industry eliminates many sound-absorbing materials for aesthetic reasons, but also focuses on opening up the space – it is fashionable, for example, to combine the kitchen with the living room. So how to fight with the reverberation in such empty and devoid of walls interiors?

What eliminates echo in the house?

In a spacious apartment, where the problem of reverberation occurs, you can introduce sound-absorbing materials. All rough and corrugated surfaces reduce echo, so sound doesn’t spread to all rooms. These include everyday items – flower pots, books, as well as fabrics on sofas, chairs, and carpets. With large spaces, unfortunately, we are not able to put so many books or plants to fully eliminate the reverberation.

The solution is wallpapers with acoustic properties. They are between 5 mm and 10 mm thick and – what is important – after sticking them on the wall they can be painted in any color . They can absorb up to 55% of sound.

For real music lovers and players, professional perforated acoustic panels are recommended. It is a great solution when we have a recording studio at home or we like to listen to music a bit louder without headphones. They are perfect for modern gaming interiors, as well as industrial ones. They are usually about 12 mm thick and have a substructure for mounting. They take up more space than the above mentioned wallpapers, but they perfectly absorb sounds and quiet the room.

Decorative acoustic panels

We probably also care about the aesthetic finish of the interior, so it is worth considering wood-like acoustic panels. They have perforated shapes and look exceptionally designer. In order for them to fulfil their function, we do not have to fill the whole room with them – one or two walls with wood-like panels will be enough to make the echo effect disappear for good!

3D decorative panels make an even better aesthetic impression. Although they do not have special acoustic certificates, but their undulating surface also absorbs sounds and refracts the sound wave. They can be easily matched to the look of our living room or game room.

Another solution is to install acoustic ceilings. This is a way to get rid of reverberation for those who do not imagine interfering with the walls. Manufacturers of ceilings offer, among others, mineral and gypsum boards. They have been used for many years in office spaces where acoustics play a very important role.

A much more expensive, but at the same time original idea is to install an upholstered wall. It is entirely covered with a material of our choice and is mounted to a plasterboard. You can also buy very modern upholstered panels, which will create an interesting pattern on the wall – they will be both sound insulation and beautiful decoration.

All these solutions are best discussed with the renovation team, because not in every room it is possible to install acoustic ceilings. The cheapest option will be acoustic wallpaper, as well as 3D panels, which can be glued directly on the walls and look very modern.
